Materials and their properties

There is an interesting video here that I think lots of you will enjoy https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/30642/what-stuff-does

File:Ottawa Winterlude Festival Ice Sculptures (34757955673).jpg ...It shows different states of matter, such as rocks in a quarry and ice sculptures. It shows lots of practical uses of solids, liquids and gases. Why not watch it and talk about it with your families?

Teeth investigation

We are investigating what might happen to our teeth, if we don’t brush them after having certain foods or drinks. We used white, hard-boiled eggs, to replicate our teeth. The shell would be like the enamel. Each child designed their investigation, then their class decided what they would like to test. We have made predictions. What are yours?

Come back next week to find out what happened.

Headphones investigation

Beech and Oak Classes worked together to design a comparative test to find out which materials would make the best headphones.

The children thought about the things that would need to be kept the same, to make it as fair as possible.

We found out that cotton wool was the best at absorbing sound. This is because it is soft and has lots of airpockets, so doesn't vibrate like hard materials. The sound waves cannot get through.

Good, good, good, good vibrations!

In science we have been learning about sounds and how they are created through vibrations. We have also learned that we hear these sounds because they travel as sound waves through different media (like air) to our ears. We have also learned about pitch, through homemade and school instruments, and how the pitch can be changed. Thank you to all our parent helpers for supporting us! We can't do things like this without you.

The ruler vibrates when you ping it

When you bang the drum, the vibrations make the pebbles move.

Ask me about the tuning fork!

The vibrations - and sound -stops when you hold the tuning fork

We can hear each other through the string telephone

Out and about

This afternoon we have been out and about in the school grounds, to see what plants and creatures we could find, in September. We made some predictions about the things we might see, then observed carefully.
